What Is ABA Therapy?

Applied behavior analysis therapy, known as ABA therapy, is a clinical form of behavioral therapy. It incorporates strategies derived from principles of behavior to help those with developmental disabilities grow and engage in the world more healthily.

ABA therapy has been around for decades and has undergone many changes to reach its current and most refined state. ABA’s hybrid approach uniquely addresses the cognitive, social, and emotional needs of those with developmental disabilities.

ABA therapy is the common go-to intervention for children diagnosed with autism for this reason.

Using positive reinforcement, the ABA therapist teaches children with autism the various development skills needed to thrive in numerous environments, such as school or playing with peers. There’s also a focus on identifying triggering stimuli and providing coping strategies for your child. This minimizes negative behaviors such as tantrums, self-harming, and aggression.

Why should you choose us as your Cerritos applied behavior analysis provider? Because our quality ABA therapy is based on teamwork, honesty, and genuine care for you and your child.

Team Effort

For us, ABA therapy isn’t just between a child and their ABA therapist. We collaborate with parents, other medical providers, and even teachers when necessary.

Parent training sessions help you understand how your child sees the world and gives you the tools to better respond to your child’s unique needs. We want parents to feel empowered and part of the process because it creates a supportive environment during the ABA process.

Honesty

Quality ABA therapy can be intensive depending on your child’s needs. Due to the dedication needed to see real changes, it can feel like a lifestyle change for parents and children. However, the intensity level may lower as your child progresses.

When we meet with parents we always emphasize this aspect immediately. We also encourage parents to ask as many questions as needed to understand our recommendations and how they can improve a child’s quality of life.

Once parents feel comfortable with us, we’ll meet with their child to fully understand their needs. Once we meet your child, we’ll create a care plan that caters specifically to your child. Every child with autism is unique and requires different intervention plans.

Our ABA services focus on what your child needs, which, at some points, may seem overwhelming to parents. For example, if your child is about to enter school, we may recommend 1:1 therapy before they go. This is because we can teach them foundational skills to make them more successful in a school setting.

Going to school is a completely different environment; your child can become overwhelmed and even regress in their improvements. Waiting is a short-term complication for long-term benefits.

We offer a variety of ABA therapy programs near Cerritos, CA, that cater to different needs and age groups.

ABA Therapy for Kids: 6–18

ABA therapy in our Foundations program is designed to meet the needs of older children, who can require more intense and structured sessions. Because some behaviors become a natural part of their lives, older children may struggle with unlearning harmful behaviors and replacing them with positive behaviors.

As always, we’ll create a unique plan for your child that addresses their social, behavioral, or emotional needs and build those skills using NET and DTT methods.

Early Intervention:
0–3

During Early Start, we work with newborns and toddlers who may be showing signs of autism or are behind typical developmental milestones. After meeting the child and speaking with the parents, we’ll create a plan that addresses potential developmental delays, or start building the foundation for future learning.

We’ll help them develop social and behavioral skills using Natural Environment Teaching (NET). This is teaching in natural settings and methods, such as learning through play with their family and peers.

At Spectrum Behavioral Therapies, we also work with young adults and adults diagnosed with autism because it’s never too late to start ABA therapy.

We’ll create a custom plan that focuses on their specific needs so they can live independently and happily.

School Prep:
3–6

Going from a home to school environment is asking children with autism to change their typical behavior and schedule. This can cause tantrums out of fear or distraction and hinder learning.

This ABA program will prepare them for school by teaching and improving specific behaviors, such as socializing with peers and being able to follow instructions. This allows children to get the most out of each school day. We’ll use a combination of the Natural Environment Teaching (NET) method and Discrete Trial Training (DTT). DTT structures learning into small parts for easier understanding for children. It’s important to teach in NET as quickly as possible as it is the best method to ensure generalization across people, places, and stimuli.

We also offer a school shadowing program in which your child’s dedicated technician will join your child in school. We’ll collaborate with teachers and teach them how to support your child until they can go to school on their own.

Our ultimate goal is to quickly fade our prompts and presence until your child can independently and successfully participate in the school environment.

Social Skills:
All Ages

We offer a program that offers an opportunity for children and adults diagnosed with autism to grow their social skills in a natural and fun way.

We design these opportunities with intention, carefully creating groups, not by age but by skill level, so everyone can benefit from the group lesson.

We host play dates with lesson plans for children and weekly or monthly group meetings for teens and adults.

It’s a great way to have fun and practice social skills at the same time.

We’ll work together to create an environment where your child can grow and flourish.
