What Is ABA Therapy?

ABA therapy, or applied behavior analysis, is based on a science that uses behavior principles to improve socially significant behaviors (Cooper, Heron, and Heward (2007). ABA therapy raises the individual’s quality of life by improving emotional, cognitive, adaptive, and social skills.

The practice of ABA therapy is backed by decades of research and refinement. The current approach reinforces positive behaviors and uses coping mechanisms to discourage adverse behavior.

The emotional and practical approach allows behaviors to be addressed without forgetting about the emotional reasons for unwanted reactions. This approach teaches people with developmental disabilities how to engage the world healthily without changing their personality.

We’re different from other ABA therapy providers near Los Alamitos because we address a more comprehensive set of skills: social, motor, adaptive, language, cognitive, executive functioning, and play skills. Our approach to these skills emphasizes honesty and teamwork.

Honesty

We’re always honest with those who use our services. Quality ABA therapy is intensive and not a quick solution. It requires deep commitment, and depending on your child’s needs, the recommended service level can be 10–40 hours weekly.

At times, our honesty may not be what you want to hear, but it is what your child ultimately needs. For example, we may suggest your child wait another year before going to school so we can better prepare them by teaching them foundational skills such as following simple instructions, attending, communicating, etc., so they can be successful in school.

Each child with autism is unique and requires different interventions. This is why our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) create a plan specifically for your child after a consultation and then check in monthly to make adjustments.

True Team Effort

For us, ABA therapy isn’t just between a child and their therapist. We involve the parents, too. Parent training is necessary to maintain and improve progress, as it empowers parents to take a larger role in their child’s treatment.

It’s truly a team effort between the dedicated behavioral technician, ABA therapy supervisor, parents, and the child. We’ll also work with other medical providers and the child’s teachers when needed.

We offer a variety of ABA therapy programs near Los Alamitos, CA, that cater to different needs and age groups.

Early Start

This program is for children up to three years old who may either be showing signs of autism or have missed some key developmental milestones.

Early intervention is essential because the brain is still developing, making it easier for children to learn new behaviors and skills.

During early start, we address delays and build foundational skills, such as motor, language, and social skills. We’ll do this using Natural Environment Teaching (NET), a teaching method in which you work in an environment that feels natural to a child—such as their home.

We’ll also teach in the way that kids naturally learn—through play—so it’s easier for your child to absorb these lessons.

School Readiness

Preparing children diagnosed with autism for school is crucial to ensure they have a positive experience at school. Due to the changes in schedule, rules, and environment, many children with autism can become overwhelmed and regress into destructive behaviors such as aggression and tantrums.

School readiness is designed for children 3–6 years old to prepare them for school expectations such as sitting still and socializing with peers. We’ll do this using the NET method and Discrete Trial Training (DTT), which breaks down large topics or ideas into smaller pieces for better comprehension.

We also offer a school shadowing service that allows us to support your child while in school. We’ll work with teachers to create a supportive environment so your child can go to school independently.

Foundations

It’s never too late to start ABA therapy, which is why we have our Foundations program. The program is for children six through eighteen years old who require more intensive and structured interventions.

Foundations will assist your child to unlearn adverse behaviors and develop executive functions and other skills such as communication, social skills, daily living, and much more. This ensures they can thrive in society independently.

Young Adult/Adult

We also work with adults diagnosed with autism because we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to grow and improve themselves. We’ll create a custom plan to address what needs to be unlearned and what needs to be developed so the adult can live independently and happily.

Social Skills

We created the social skills program for cases where social skills are the main concern. Monitored by our experts, we create opportunities for children and adults to develop their social skills naturally. These events can include playdates or weekly meetings for older children.
