What Is ABA Therapy?

ABA (applied behavioral analysis) is a form of behavioral therapy based on decades of research. It uses practical interventions to guide the social behaviors of those with developmental disabilities. ABA is designed to improve desired behaviors such as attention, communication, and social skills while minimizing challenging behaviors such as self-harm, aggression, and tantrums.

ABA therapy is a clinical recommendation for children with autism because it uniquely addresses their needs, breaking down lessons into small parts that are easier for children to understand.

Teaching in the natural setting, otherwise known as Natural Environment Teaching (NET), is the most ideal way to to teach children with autism. However, if a skill needs to be broken down into smaller parts, Discrete Trial Training (DTT) method may be implemented. This is where we’ll break down the skill they’re developing into smaller, more understandable parts.

When working with your child, a therapist identifies triggering stimuli that lead to potentially harmful behaviors. Once found, the therapist will determine how to prevent the trigger or teach your child better ways to cope with the triggering stimuli.

There are many providers in Garden Grove and many ways to approach ABA, making it difficult for parents to decide which therapist is the right fit. Spectrum Behavioral Therapies is different because of our commitment to honesty and teamwork.

Honesty

Your child’s needs should be at the core of ABA therapy. When discussing potential care solutions, we’re candid with the parents or adults interested in our services.

We’re forthcoming about the child’s needs, including the intensive nature of the therapy process. For example, a child may need therapy 15– 40 hours a week and the service level recommendation depends on the child’s individual needs.

When meeting parents, we never offer standard timelines before meeting a child. We believe every child with autism requires different interventions determined by their needs.

True Teamwork

We don’t stop at solitary treatment. Instead, ABA therapy is a collaborative effort between our team at Spectrum Behavioral Therapies, parents, other providers, and the child. This provides a supportive and productive environment for the child.

We provide Parent Training to ensure the continuation of progress made in therapy. Understanding your child’s treatment empowers you to be part of your child’s progress.

We offer a variety of ABA therapy programs in Garden Grove, CA, that cater to different needs and age groups.

Early Start

We designed our early intervention program for young children (0–3 years old) who show signs of autism or have missed developmental milestones. It’s crucial to enact early intervention in children who potentially have autism. Early intervention makes learning easier for the child as their brains develop—hopefully lessening the degree of needed treatment.

In Early Start, we address delays and build foundational skills to improve your child’s life as they grow older. Developmental skills in communication and social skills can improve greatly through this program.

School Readiness

Our School Readiness program prepares school-aged children (3–6 years old) for the requirements of a school environment. The program’s goal is to ensure that children enjoy school and can learn and thrive within it.

We focus on key skills such as socializing, attending, following instructions, communication, and play skills.

In addition to the School Readiness program, we offer School Shadowing. The Shadowing program supports your child while they adjust to being in school until your child can participate in school activities independently.

Foundations

Foundational skills can be developed after the age of six—though they might require more intensive therapy.

Our Foundations program can help older children with both general and specific behavioral skills, such as:

  • Accomplishing daily tasks
  • Socializing
  • Executive functioning

Please know that it’s never too late to start ABA therapy.

Young Adult and Adult Services

Similar to the Foundations program, we have a program for adults who have not had the chance to try ABA therapy until now. We focus on developing executive functioning skills that empower clients to live independently and happily.

As with other ages, individual needs are prioritized; customized treatment plans are based on the circumstances.

Social Skills

Developing social skills with peers can be challenging in a one-on-one environment, so we provide professionally monitored social opportunities for kids and adults. People diagnosed with autism can grow their social skills naturally during events like playdates or weekly meetings.

It also allows parents to fully grasp their child’s progress through ABA therapy.
