What Is ABA Therapy?

ABA (applied behavior analysis) therapy is a behavioral treatment that supports those with developmental disabilities. Through decades of exploration and refinement, ABA has developed proven interventions to help emotional, cognitive, and social skills. ABA is used as an intervention for children diagnosed with autism due to its use of positive reinforcement for desirable behavior and the development of coping mechanisms for triggers that cause harmful behaviors.

The best approach to ABA therapy when working with children is through Natural Environment Teaching (NET) and Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT). NET focuses on developing skills in a safe environment that feels natural to a child, such as their home. The ABA therapist teaches the child through play because that’s the natural way kids learn. DTT breaks large concepts—such as how socialization works—into smaller lessons so they’re easier for the child to understand, potentially accelerating the development process for behavioral or social skills.

Spectrum Behavioral Therapies is different from other behavioral therapy services thanks to our love of honesty and teamwork.

Honesty

Every child’s needs are different and require unique solutions. As a result, we only create an ABA plan once we’ve met the child. Some solutions are intensive, which can feel overwhelming. We believe in having transparent conversations about the best path forward, even if it may be hard to hear. For example, extreme cases may require ABA therapy 15–40 hours a week. In certain circumstances, we suggest a child not start school despite being the right age. This is because our team has years of experience and knows these interventions will ultimately help your child diagnosed with autism in the long term.

ABA therapy can be slow-moving, but this work is ultimately worth the effort. We are dedicated to your child’s needs and will be there to help the whole way.

Teamwork

Applied behavior analysis therapy cannot be done alone. This is why Spectrum Behavioral Therapies creates an entire team for your child. We also work with outside medical providers and teachers to ensure your child is always supported while they grow. We also want parents to feel comfortable enough to participate. We offer parent training that provides the knowledge and skills to better interact with their child, so progress is maintained between sessions.

We offer a variety of ABA therapy programs near Westminster, CA, that cater to different needs and age groups.

Early Start

Early Start is designed as an early intervention for children 0–3 years old who have missed key developmental milestones or are showing signs of autism. Early intervention is important because young brains are still developing. Starting ABA early makes the learning process easier for the child.

In this program, we focus heavily on Natural Environment Teaching (NET), which involves teaching your child various behavioral and developmental skills through play.

School Readiness

School is a crucial turning point for children diagnosed with autism; if not handled carefully, it could become a significantly negative experience. Many changes can overwhelm a child with autism, including a new environment, a set of rules to follow, and peers to talk to. These stimuli can encourage the return of harmful behaviors.

We created our school readiness program to prepare 3 to 6-year-old children for what schools require, such as sitting still and socializing with peers. For extra security, we also have a school shadowing program, which lets us offer extra support while your child attends school.

Foundations

ABA therapy has no age limit. While early intervention is often best, older children can still benefit. They tend to require more intensive solutions since some behaviors are difficult to unlearn.

We created the Foundations program to address the unique needs of children 6–18 years old. Typical focuses include developing skills such as executive functioning, finishing daily tasks, and socializing.

We create custom plans for each child based on their unique needs.

Young Adult and Adult Services

We also work with adults diagnosed with autism who may not have had access to ABA therapy. We focus on developing the behavioral skills needed so you can live independently and happily.

Social Skills

The social skills program is designed so children and adults diagnosed with autism can develop their social skills in a safe space. We host playdates for children and weekly meetings for older kids or adults—all monitored by us.
